Saint Paul in Malta & the Early Christian Era

English

In the year 60 AD a big storm hit the Maltese Islands which brought a galley with 167 persons aboard in one of the beautiful bays of Malta. Among the crew there was the Apostle Paul known as Saulus from Tarcus. Accompanying the apostle Paul was Luke, a medical doctor by profession and profecient in writing. St. Luke the Evangelist, wrote an interesting description about the shipwreck of St. Paul on the islands, where he described the local people as barbarians as they did not speak Latin or Greek. Saint Paul healed many locals including Publius’ father, later also baptising him in the town of Melita.

During the tour, the guide will first take you to Rabat, thus visiting St. Paul’s Grotto where the Apostle Paul lived for three months. A walk through the narrow winding streets of Rabat would give a taste about the early medieval architecture. You will then visit St. Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina, where you can enjoy the splendour of the artistic works inside the temple and following the history about the role of St. Publius as the first bishop ordained by Apostle Paul. Finally the bus will drive you to St. Paul’s Bay where the shipwreck occured in 60 AD. An interesting walk on the garigue will bring you closer to the historical events in the early christian era after the apostle Paul.

It is highly recommended to wear good walking shoes. Free time for lunch will be given around midday.
